Travelling to Armenia

Arcane, unspoiled and imperious, Armenia has a 3000-year-history to tell. Book your tickets with Aegean Airlines and discover a country with impressive world heritage monuments and legendary hospitality.

Must-see sights

The “land of rock and stone”, home to ancient monasteries and biblical Mt Ararat, is a destination full of surprises and wonders.

  • Built on the banks of the Hrazdan River, the capital city of Yerevan has been continuously inhabited for 17 centuries and is the cultural and financial heart of the country. It is a beautiful city with wide boulevards, spacious squares, lush green gardens, imposing buildings and marvellous museums. The city’s landmark is the Cascade, a monumental architectural and natural complex of vast stone steps and waterfalls leading up to Haghtanak Park (Victory Park), that offers the best view in the city.
  • Vagharshapat, also known as Etchmiadzin, is the spiritual and administrative headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Pontifical Residence of the Supreme Patriarch of All Armenians. The unique ecclesiastical architecture of the 4th century Etchmiadzin Cathedral and the ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral have earned them a place among UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
  • A city reminiscent of the glory and splendour of imperial Russia, Gyumri is one of the most beautiful cities in Armenia. Its historic centre is an open-air museum with more than 100 magnificent residences built in 19th century classical style and important museums.

Trip ideas in Armenia

The Armenian Highlands and the stunning Ararat plain hold unexpected treasures.

  • The idyllic Lake Sevan, the largest lake in the Caucasus, is a popular tourist destination. Combine it with a visit to Noratus cemetery which has the largest surviving collection of khachkars, or Armenian cross-stones, a typical example of Armenian art.
  • North of Lake Sevan, in a magical location amid forest-covered mountains and deep gorges, are two masterpieces of Armenian medieval architecture and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat.
  • Crossing the Ararat plain to the south you will find rare religious and natural landmarks. Some must-see sights are the historical pilgrimage site of Khor Virap Monastery, the arcane Zorats Karer, often referred to as the Armenian Stonehenge, and the mysterious cave dwellings near the town of Goris. The nearby Tatev Monastery and the unique collection of thousands of petroglyphs in the Ughtasar region are also worth visiting.

Armenia is a captivating year-round destination. Book your tickets with Greece’s major airline and enjoy an exciting journey to the heart of Eurasia.
