Travelling to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Land of mountains and rivers, homeland of the great Nobel Laureate for literature Ivo Andrić, for centuries crossroads of East and West, Bosnia-Herzegovina is a place of unparalleled natural beauty and cultural heritage. Book a seat for Bosnia-Herzegovina on a flight with Aegean Airlines and discover one of Europe’s most charming secrets.
First time in Bosnia-Herzegovina
Beautiful little towns that adorn the country’s magical natural landscapes.
- A melting pot of cultures and religions for centuries, historic Sarajevo has risen from the dark years of the bloody civil war to become one of Europe’s most exciting capitals. The Old City, a charming mixture of Ottoman Culture and Central European aesthetic, offers a unique journey through its rich history. A visit to the historic 16th-century Gazi Husrev Bey mosque and the “Tunnel of Hope”, a symbol of the inhabitants’ determination to survive during the four-year siege of Sarajevo, is definitely worth it.
- Built on the banks of the turquoise River Neretva, in the shadow of the verdant Mount Velez, fairy-tale Mostar is a medieval jewel comprised of beautiful stone mansions, imposing mosques, Turkish baths and atmospheric traditional markets on picturesque cobbled lanes. A landmark and symbol of the city’s rebirth is the famous Stari Most (Old Bridge), the impressive single-arched bridge of the 16th century (UNESCO monument), which was completely rebuilt in 2004 after it was destroyed in the war.
- Visit picture-postcard Jajce, the city of the Bosnian kings with the gorgeous hill castle and the spectacular Pliva waterfall, in the centre of the city and at an altitude of 22 metres.
- A fortress-city of Eastern culture, historic Travnik was the capital of Bosnia during the final period of Ottoman rule. Admire the grand 15th-century castle and the ornate mausoleums of the Ottoman officials (viziers). Visit the house of the Nobel Laureate for literature Ivo Andrić, and enjoy a walk along the gurgling, crystal-clear Plava Voda (Blue Water) springs.
- Just 13 km from Mostar, the idyllic town of Blagaj attracts thousands of visitors, thanks to the magical scenery of the Blagaj Tekke, an imposing Dervish monastery of the 16th century that nestles in amongst the foothills of a 200 metre high sheer rock at the spring of the River Buna.
Discover the nature of Bosnia-Herzegovina
Thanks to its lush nature, Bosnia-Herzegovina is a paradise for lovers of adventure and extreme sports.
- At a distance of only 40 and 30 km respectively from Sarajevo, the ski resorts of Bjelasnica and Jahorina have excellent facilities and impressive, Olympic-standard ski slopes, a legacy of the 1984 Winter Olympics.
- 100 km south of Sarajevo is the magical beauty of Sutjeska National Park, a rare ecosystem of wildlife and immaculate nature, ideal for hiking and mountaineering. The area includes Mount Maglic, the country’s highest peak (2,386 m), with many mountain refuges, as well as the Perucica Forest, one of the two last virgin forests in Europe.
- In the northwest part of the country, the lovely town of Bihac is an ideal base for rafting in the waters of the River Una, one of the most exciting downhill runs in Europe. The most spectacular natural obstacle on the route, and one of the country’s most famous sights, is the amazingly beautiful Strbacki Buk waterfall, at an altitude of 23.5 metres.
- The magical Pliva lakes near Jajce offer an idyllic setting for canoeing, kayaking, trout fishing, cycling and even swimming in their turquoise waters. Don’t forget to stop at the amazing medieval watermills in the region, a national monument.
Beautiful and with a legendary hospitality, Bosnia-Herzegovina is an ideal destination all year round for lovers of history and adventure. Book your flights at www.aegeanair.com and take off with Aegean Airlines for the most enigmatic country in the Balkans.
