Travelling to Lebanon
A former French mandate, Lebanon is full of contradictions and inexhaustible vitality. Even in its times of national crisis, the Lebanese seem to know how to enjoy life in their cosmopolitan cities and at their golden beaches. Book your tickets with Aegean Airlines for a country that is sure to fascinate you.
Lebanon's Major Sights
Trendy resorts, a fascinating capital city and imposing archaeological sites are an irresistible draw for visitors.
- Known as the "Paris of the Middle East", Beirut has never ceased to enchant visitors, travellers, colonists and conquerors. Enjoy a traditional stroll along the Corniche promenade and admire the impressive natural rock arches known as Pigeon Rocks off Beirut's westernmost tip. Wander round the historic centre and relax at one of the elegant restaurants or beach bars, or do some shopping at the high-end stores and colourful Souk el Tayeb. Don't miss a visit to the National Museum of Beirut to view the artefacts that testify to Lebanon's centuries-old history.
- Byblos, or Jubayl in Arabic, is considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, since 7000 BC when it is believed to have been established. Visit the archaeological site on UNESCO's World Heritage list and explore one of the lovely seaside villages in the area to sample the seafood appetisers.
- Baalbek, the ancient Heliopolis, is one of the most popular destinations in Lebanon. The city owes its reputation to the colossal archaeological site with the Roman temples to Jupiter and Bacchus, and to the annual International Arts Festival it hosts.
- A 6,000-year-old city attracts visitors to the south of Lebanon. Coastal Sidon, or Saida, with its charming historic centre will enchant you, while also of interest is the nearby Eshmun Temple. (The area belongs to Hezbollah, so make sure to check for possible travel advisories.)
Explore Lebanon
Surprising destinations will change your image of the Middle East!
- Lebanon was a finalist for inclusion on the New7Wonders of Nature list, thanks to the spectacular Jeita Grotto, with its incredible geological formations and subterranean lake. It can be explored either on foot or by boat.
- The Cedars of Lebanon have been used to construct almost all of the ancient world, from Solomon's Temple to the Pharaohs' ships. Nowadays, the ancient but now smaller forest of the Cedars of God in the mountains of northern Lebanon is a beautiful and protected natural monument on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.
- It is worth making a visit to the inland town of Anjar to see the ruins of the palace of the city's founder, Umayyad caliph al-Walid I, with the slim columns and elegant arches highlighted by the green valley in the background.
Ancient and modern, elegant and oppressive, confrontational and cosmopolitan, Lebanon challenges the senses, memory and thought and teaches that life is for living. Book your tickets with Aegean Airlines and fly in comfort to the land of contrasts and history.
